Teaching Parents Association - Meeting the Needs of Home Schooling Families
How To Get Started
Taking charge of your children’s education is a big responsibility. Thus, parents need to understand exactly what homeschooling entails before they jump in with both feet. Some background research is essential.
Is Homeschooling Legal in Kansas?
(taken from the CHECK website )
(Please note: the following discussion does not constitute the giving of legal advice and is not intended to be a substitute for competent legal counsel.)
Homeschooling is perfectly legal in the state of Kansas. Unfortunately, Kansas’s statutes do not mention homeschooling specifically, and thus some confusion exists on this issue, especially among public school officials and occasionally among local legal authorities. However, among the state’s legal authorities, which includes the Kansas Attorney General, the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS), the legal staff of the Kansas State Board of Education, and numerous district courts, the legality of homeschooling in Kansas is fairly well settled.

With a plethora of materials on the market for homeschoolers today, the search for the right curriculum can be overwhelming! Here’s an overview of some of the different curriculum available and what factors you can use to determine what’s best for your family.
Where should I start my research?

You can get a great start at your local library or through your favorite bookstore. The resources listed here are separated into homeschooling overviews, philosophy, legal issues and periodicals.
What About Socialization?
If you’ve been homeschooling for any length of time or have even mentioned that you are considering it as an option, you are, no doubt, fully aware that this is perhaps the most oft-asked question of homeschoolers. In response to this, one veteran homeschooler responds,
”We are very concerned about socialization...that’s why we homeschool.” Though surely not what they expected, this witty reply will give the unsuspecting questioner some food for thought.
In 2003, the Home School Legal Defense Association commissioned the largest research survey to date of adults who were home educated. Conducted by Dr. Brian Ray of the National Home Education Research Institute, the study surveyed over 7,300 adults who were homeschooled. Click here to read more about his survey and the results.
